Underground Swinger Clubs Lively in Sleepy City

This sleepy little city in wheat country could be earning itself a new nickname: Sin City. Saskatoon’s swinger underground is enjoying a bit of a boom.

The free-love, key-party lifestyle of the late-1960s and 1970s is back and thriving in Saskatchewan. Classified ads are filled with couples seeking other couples. A new private club is on the way, while weekly get-togethers, scattered throughout the city, are attracting more people.

An annual party, held in the spring, drew more than 350 people last year. An online advertisement is seeking those interested in joining a membership-based swingers’ club while another claims to be setting up a private couples’ club with a swingers’ room.

Beneath a row of worn-out dart boards, 20 or so people sit chatting around a row of pushed-together tables, beers flowing, in a west-end Saskatoon pub.

The waitress, in a short black skirt and heels, sits on a man’s lap while his wife chats, tables away, with another couple.

Here we are in this pub and doing some off-the-wall sort of behaviour and people look at us and probably think, ‘what the hell?’ said Joan, a 44-year-old purple-haired machine operator who has an open relationship with her husband, Dan, a caretaker.

But to us this is normal. This is how it is.

They’ve been joined by couples from Regina, Moose Jaw and a few nearby towns.

In other cities, couples swing at clubs that variously describe themselves as swingers’ clubs, hedonists’ clubs and lifestyle clubs, like Bashful and Bold in Ottawa, Club Eden in Calgary, the Fantasy Nights Club in Edmonton, or Menage a Quatre in Toronto, where there are at least a dozen clubs that draw people from all over the world.
